The Children’s Agenda calls on Governor Andrew Cuomo, the New York State Assembly, and the New York State Senate, to commit tofully funding the Foundation Aid formula over the next two years. Foundation Aid targets funding to school districts based on the needs of the students, and the most money owed is to districts with high proportions of students living in poverty and students of color. Foundation Aid is an issue of equity and racial justice in education. We need a substantial down payment of $2 billion in additional foundation aid for the 2020-21 school year.
Monroe County’s public schools are owed nearly $200 million in Foundation Aid from New York State for the 2019-20 school year. With this money the Rochester City School District would have a surplus rather than a deficit, and schools throughout Monroe County would be able to lower class sizes, provide additional social-emotional supports for students, and fund hundreds of summer and enrichment programs. Tell the Governor and your local state legislators to fully fund Foundation Aid!
